Join the Wellington Recycling Challenge!
NAU MAI, HAERE MAI!
Welcome to our
♻️ Wellington Recycling Challenge ♻️
This challenge is for everyone! 😉
Whether you're a recycling pro or just starting out, everyone is welcome! It's all about having fun, learning by doing and discovering how small actions can make a big difference for Wellington and Papatūānuku💚
Are you ready to give it a go? 😎
Joining the challenge
First, you need to visit Kilbirnie Library, where your recycling adventure begins!
How to play
1️⃣ Set it up
Lay the blanket on the ground. Place the 8 charts next to each other (1-8) at the top of the blanket.
2️⃣ Take a look
Take one item at a time from the box. Look at it carefully and think: Where does this go? 🤔
3️⃣ Sort it out
Place each item below the chart you think is right.
Put items below each other, not on top, so we can see them all.
Sort at least 3 items into each category to enter our prize draw!
But why stop there?😃
The more you sort, the more you learn!♻️
Challenge yourself to sort as many items as you can.
3 to enter, more to explore - can you sort them ALL?😉
4️⃣ Choose the right place
You can put items into:
- 🗑 Landfill
- ♻️ Plastics
- 🥫 Metals
- 🗞️ Paper & Cardboard
- 🍾 Glass
- 🛍️ Soft Plastics
- 🥮 Lids + Caps
- 🪱 Compost
Finish
5️⃣ All done?
When you finish, take a picture of the whole mat! If it's too big to fit into one photo, you can take two pictures to show all your sorted items.
Scan the QR code to send us your picture(s) and enter the prize draw!🤩
Then put everything back into the box and leave the game just the way you found it (see flyer).

Essential guidelines for playing
To ensure a smooth and fun experience for everyone, please keep these important guidelines in mind:
- This is a learning game: There are no wrong answers - it’s about learning Wellington’s recycling rules.
- We use clean items only: All items are clean and safe to handle. Please don’t add extra rubbish from outside.
- One entry per play: Each completed game counts as one entry in the draw.
- Take one clear photo: Photos should clearly show all items and bins so we can see your sorting.
- Reset the game: Please put everything back exactly as you found it so the next person can play.
- Adult help for younger children: Little tamariki are welcome - with a grown-up nearby.
